Monkey ‘tied with rope around neck’ in live ‘execution’ performance

A video depicting monkeys allegedly subjected to mistreatment during a live performance has ignited public anger in China. The footage, shared online, shows a macaque fitted with a metal muzzle and dressed in a yellow vest, forced to kneel by a man addressing an audience filled with children.

Incident at Hebei Province Attraction

The disturbing act occurred at Longquan Ancient Town Drama Fantasy City in Luquan District, Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province. The performer then draped a black cloth over the monkey’s head and secured its arms behind its back to a plastic pipe.

With a prop gun in hand, the individual appeared to mimic shooting the animal, causing it to collapse and remain motionless. Additional footage reveals another monkey bound by a long rope around its neck, while two others are seen restrained in the background.

Staff at Longquan Ancient Town stated the monkey act was managed by an external performance team, clarifying the attraction only provided the venue. They denied direct oversight of the show’s operations.

Following widespread viewer complaints, the scenic area announced it had ended its contract with the performance partner and stopped the act. Customer service confirmed the routine was removed from the schedule.

Officials Launch Investigation

Officials from Luquan District’s Culture, Radio, Television, Sports and Tourism Bureau acknowledged the public backlash and declared an inquiry into the incident. They noted the performers were part of an outside group, not employees of the site.

Officials confirmed the investigation is still active, seeking to determine the extent of the animal treatment. The case has drawn comparisons to a 2023 scandal involving a global monkey torture ring, where online users paid to watch primates being abused.

The BBC uncovered the network after a year-long probe, revealing a global setup spanning the US to Indonesia. Animal activists partnered with the World Service to expose hundreds of individuals in the US, UK, and elsewhere funding the mistreatment of baby long-tailed macaques on camera.

Initially posted on YouTube, the videos later shifted to Telegram as demand grew for more extreme content. Police were alerted, leading to arrests of those linked to the operation.
