Who is Markwayne Mullin, Trump’s new pick for Homeland Security secretary?
President Donald Trump has selected Oklahoma Senator Markwayne Mullin to lead the Department of Homeland Security, succeeding the controversial leader Kristi Noem. Mullin, a first-term senator and former mixed martial arts fighter, has consistently aligned with Trump’s agenda since entering the Senate. His confirmation by the Senate remains a necessary step before assuming the role.
Mullin is known for his assertive approach and has been vocal in endorsing policies aimed at detaining undocumented immigrants—a key focus of the Trump administration. “I’m a Republican and a conservative,” he stated at the Capitol after his appointment was announced, emphasizing his commitment to enforcing laws passed by Congress regardless of personal disagreements. “My priority will be securing the homeland, and we’re thrilled about this chance.”
“What is actually happening right now with the Democrat Party by this political theatre, by shutting down DHS for something that you even admitted yourself can’t be done,” Mullin told CNN last month. “They’re not stopping [Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)] from doing their job.”
Mullin’s selection comes amid heightened scrutiny of the agency, following recent controversies like the deaths of two U.S. citizens in Minnesota during encounters with immigration officials. He has previously backed DHS initiatives and the administration’s immigration enforcement strategies. After Alex Pretti was killed by agents in Minneapolis, Mullin posted on social media: “Obstructing federal law enforcement is a felony. Most Americans follow ICE instructions without thinking twice.”
One of Mullin’s most memorable moments in the Senate occurred early in his tenure when he challenged a union representative during a hearing. The incident unfolded while the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee was hearing from Sean O’Brien, president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, in November 2023. O’Brien had criticized Mullin on social media, calling him a “greedy CEO who pretends like he’s self-made.” In response, Mullin suggested a physical confrontation, motioning to remove his wedding ring as a symbol of the proposed fight.
Another committee member intervened, urging him to sit down. Earlier in 2023, Mullin had already clashed with O’Brien during a tense exchange, telling him to “shut your mouth.” Their rivalry continued online, with O’Brien later posting a photo of Mullin and writing: “You know where to find me. Anyplace, Anytime cowboy.” Mullin replied: “MMA fight for charity of our choice. Sept 30 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I’ll give you 3 days to accept.”
Mullin, who was sworn in as a senator in 2023, has also managed a family plumbing business with his wife. Over the past two decades, he built the enterprise alongside his wife, according to his website, before entering politics. His fiery demeanor, often highlighted in media appearances, continues to shape his public persona.
