Sunglass-wearing police horse Luna retires
Thames Valley Police has announced the retirement of Luna, a horse renowned for her distinctive custom sunglasses, which she wears to shield her eyes from sunlight due to a congenital condition. The Mounted Section highlighted her unique appearance as a defining trait during her service.
Luna’s eye condition, equine recurrent uveitis, required specialized care throughout her career. Despite treatments like implants and eye drops, her vision in one eye was gradually lost. The force noted that her sunglasses, affectionately called “neigh-bands,” became a symbol of her resilience and charm.
Her final duties included accompanying the Royal Family at Royal Ascot in 2023 and participating in state events. Luna also gained attention for her bravery during a chaotic football match at Fratton Park in 2019, where she continued working after being struck by a man during fan clashes.
“She is an angel and my favorite horse in the yard. Every day I come in, I love seeing her little face over the stable door,” said Sergeant Heidi Cornick, who oversees the Mounted Section. “She’s so brave, so honest, and has had a phenomenal career. We will miss her very much.”
Luna’s retirement marks the end of 13 years of dedicated service. The Horse Trust, based in Princes Risborough, Buckinghamshire, will now care for her. Her sunglasses are set to be donated to the Thames Valley Police museum as a tribute to her legacy.
The police force confirmed that Luna recently underwent a successful eye operation, allowing her to enjoy the sun without discomfort. This step ensures she can relax and experience her final days without the need for protective gear.
The Horse Trust provides retirement and respite for UK police and military horses, ensuring they receive proper care after service. Luna’s story has become a beloved chapter in the history of equine companionship in law enforcement.
