Seven arrested at base demo accused of supporting banned group
Seven Arrested at RAF Base Protest Over Alleged Support for Banned Group
Suffolk Police reported that seven individuals were detained during demonstrations at an RAF airbase, accused of aiding the proscribed organization Palestine Action. The arrests took place on Sunday as protesters gathered near the main entrance of Lakenheath airbase, opposing military involvement in the Iran conflict. The group’s presence was linked to recent media reports about a US fighter jet downed in Iran, which was allegedly stationed at the base.
The detainees, comprising five males and two females, were held on suspicion of endorsing the banned group, according to police. A spokesperson emphasized that the arrests were made to uphold legal protocols, stating, “Suffolk Police has a duty to enforce the law without fear or favour and as it currently stands, not as it might be in the future.” They added, “Where offences are believed to have occurred, appropriate action will be taken.”

The High Court had previously ruled Palestine Action’s proscription unlawful in February, but allowed the Home Office to appeal the decision. This kept the group’s banned status in effect until the appeal’s outcome. The protests at Lakenheath were part of a six-day peace camp, including a 24-hour vigil, set to conclude on Monday.
Suffolk Police also disclosed that two participants faced charges of obstructing traffic after setting up a roadblock at the base on Saturday. The Lakenheath Alliance For Peace stated the arrests followed a speech by retired colonel Chris Romberg to the gathering of activists.
