One gunman killed and two injured in shooting at Israeli consulate in Istanbul

Shooting at Istanbul’s Israeli Consulate Leaves One Killer Dead, Two Wounded

A lone gunman was fatally shot during a confrontation near the Israeli consulate in Istanbul, with two others sustaining injuries. Turkish Interior Minister Mustafa Ciftci confirmed the incident, noting that two police officers were “slightly injured” in the exchange of fire. The attackers arrived in a rented vehicle from Izmit and included two brothers, according to the ministry.

“Intensive digital communication has been detected among the three neutralised terrorists, and the interrogation of the injured terrorists continues,” stated the interior ministry in a statement on X.

Following the clash, local governor Davut Gul clarified that only one attacker had been killed, not two as initially reported. The two injured individuals, identified as Onur Ç and Enes Ç, were also brothers. The police officers, though wounded, were not in critical condition—one received a leg injury, the other a wound to the ear.

Footage shared on social media captured the attack, showing an armed assailant being shot and collapsing. A witness described the gunfire as “loud” and persistent, lasting “15-20 minutes.” Unverified videos depicted multiple police vans and a heavy presence around the consulate, which was sealed off for several hours after the event.

“The attackers used rifles and pistols in the assault,” said Governor Gul. “No Israeli diplomatic personnel were present at the time.”

The Israeli consulate, located in Istanbul’s Besiktas business district, has been empty for over two-and-a-half years due to strained relations between Turkey and Israel over the Gaza conflict. The justice minister announced an investigation into the attack, with no group yet claiming responsibility.
