US plans to automatically register men for military draft eligibility

US Plans Automatic Military Draft Registration Starting December

Shift from Self-Registration to System-Wide Enrollment

Starting in December, young American men will be enrolled in the military draft system automatically, ending the long-standing practice of self-registration. The initiative, proposed by the Selective Service System (SSS), aims to register eligible individuals immediately upon turning 18, instead of requiring them to complete the process within 30 days of their birthday. This change is expected to streamline operations by reducing the need for annual reminders.

Supporters claim the automation will cut costs, as the government spends millions yearly on outreach to ensure men between 18 and 25 register. The SSS highlighted that integrating federal databases will transfer registration responsibility from individuals to the agency, promoting a more efficient system. Despite this, some worry the policy could lead to mandatory conscription during emergencies.

“This move allows us to redirect resources toward readiness and mobilisation,” said Pennsylvania Democratic Representative Chrissy Houlahan, who championed the legislation. “Instead of spending on education and advertising campaigns to encourage registration, funds will go to supporting our military operations.” The remark was reported by Military Times.

Historical Context and Current Compliance Rates

The last full military draft in the US occurred in 1973, following widespread opposition during the Vietnam War. Since then, selective service registration has remained in place, though compliance has waned. Government data shows only 81% of men in the 18-25 age group registered in 2024. Non-compliance carries legal consequences, including potential federal prison time of up to five years.

Although prison sentences are rare, failure to register can result in loss of eligibility for federal student aid and jobs. Non-citizens may also face denial of citizenship. Most states and territories already tie driver’s license issuance to automatic registration, but this new policy expands the system further.

Legislative Approval and Presidential Remarks

The policy was approved by Congress in December as part of the National Defense Authorization Act, which authorises military funding and global operations. The SSS submitted its proposal to the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs on 30 March. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt addressed concerns in early March, stating, “It’s not part of the current plan, but the president keeps his options open. Protecting the American people and our troops remains his top priority.”

Historically, the US has implemented a wartime draft six times, with the most recent instance during the Vietnam War. Around 1.8 million Americans were drafted during that period, leading to the eventual transition to an all-volunteer force. The SSS was reactivated in 1980 by then-President Jimmy Carter.
