OpenAI boss Sam Altman’s home targeted with Molotov cocktail

A 20-year-old individual was apprehended by San Francisco law enforcement after hurling a Molotov cocktail at the residence of Sam Altman, the head of OpenAI. The attack ignited a perimeter gate, prompting officers to respond in the early hours of Friday in the North Beach district. While the police did not disclose the suspect’s identity or the specific address of the targeted property, an OpenAI representative confirmed the incident occurred at Altman’s home. The same individual also reportedly made threats against the company’s San Francisco headquarters, according to the spokesperson.

“Thankfully, no one was injured,” the OpenAI representative stated. “We deeply value the swift action taken by SFPD and the city’s support in safeguarding our staff.”

Though the suspect had vanished from the scene before police arrived, they reappeared near an OpenAI office later that day, vowing to “burn down the building,” as per police accounts. The man was subsequently detained. An SFPD officer noted that details about his current status or potential charges remained under review, citing “an ongoing and active investigation.”

Altman’s prominence and OpenAI’s influence

Sam Altman, a billionaire with multiple properties, resides in San Francisco—the city where OpenAI was established and continues its operations. As a pivotal figure in AI, Altman has become globally recognized for his leadership in tech. The launch of ChatGPT in late 2022 catalyzed a surge in AI-driven innovation, generating over hundreds of billions in annual investment. This development has accelerated the race to create advanced tools and applications powered by artificial intelligence.

Earlier this week, the company proposed policy measures to mitigate these impacts, emphasizing “people-first” initiatives like workforce retraining and higher corporate taxes.
