Macron dismisses Trump’s ‘inelegant’ dig about his marriage
French President Emmanuel Macron faced a lighthearted jab from U.S. President Donald Trump during a recent speech on NATO, as Trump mocked Macron’s marital dynamics. The exchange occurred amid discussions about military alliances, with Trump suggesting Macron’s wife “treats him extremely badly.” Macron, however, downplayed the remark, stating it lacked significance and did not warrant a formal reply.
Trump’s mock critique in a video
A brief clip shared by the White House on YouTube—later removed—showed Trump mimicking Macron’s tone while criticizing NATO allies. In the footage, he joked about Macron’s wife, referencing a viral video from last year that depicted Brigitte Macron pushing the French leader during a trip to Vietnam. Trump also claimed Macron was “still recovering from the right to the jaw,” a nod to the incident.
“We didn’t need them, but I asked anyway,” Trump said, adopting a French accent. “I call up France, Macron—whose wife treats him extremely badly. Still recovering from the right to the jaw.”
“No no no, we cannot do that, Donald. We can do that after the war is won,” Trump added, continuing his caricature of Macron.
Macron countered by calling the remarks “neither elegant nor up to standard,” emphasizing that they were not worth a response. He redirected the conversation to pressing issues, urging a focus on “de-escalation in the Middle East” and a “ceasefire.” “There is too much talk, and it’s all over the place,” Macron stated, criticizing Trump’s approach to warfare. “We all need stability, calm, a return to peace—this isn’t a show!” he asserted.
