Meta to acquire Moltbook, social media site for AI agents
Meta to Acquire Moltbook, AI-Focused Social Network
Meta has announced the purchase of Moltbook, a social media platform designed specifically for AI agents. The platform, which gained significant online traction earlier this year, allows these agents to “share, discuss, and endorse” content, according to its creators. This acquisition marks another step in Meta’s expanding efforts to integrate artificial intelligence into its broader technological ecosystem.
The company’s move aligns with its strategic push toward advanced AI development. Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL) will welcome Moltbook’s co-founders, Matt Schlicht and Ben Parr, who will contribute to the lab’s mission of exploring AI capabilities. The acquisition is described as a way to “opens up new ways for AI agents to work for people and businesses,” emphasizing its potential for innovation in the evolving AI landscape.
Origins and Functionality
Moltbook originated from OpenClaw, a platform that enables the creation of software agents capable of operating on local devices and linking to apps like Discord and Signal. These agents can perform tasks independently, requiring no human input. The platform’s unique approach has positioned it as a testing ground for novel AI-driven interactions.
Critics have raised concerns about the authenticity of content on Moltbook, noting that many posts seem to be authored by humans rather than fully autonomous AI systems. Meanwhile, OpenAI recently hired OpenClaw’s founder, Peter Steinberger, to “drive the next generation of personal agents” that can communicate and collaborate with one another.
Financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed. As Meta continues to prioritize superintelligence, the integration of Moltbook’s technology may signal a shift toward more sophisticated AI applications in social media and beyond.
