New Nintendo Switch 2 console model to be released only in Europe claims report

Report Suggests Nintendo May Introduce Switch 2 Model Exclusively for European Market

A report claims Nintendo is being compelled to unveil a revised Switch 2 model due to EU regulations aimed at the right to repair initiative. The legislation, announced in July 2023, mandates that all consumer electronics in the EU must feature replaceable batteries by 2027, seeking to minimize electronic waste.

The Switch 2 has been available for nearly a year, yet some enthusiasts are still anticipating the potential Lite variant before making a purchase. However, the upcoming revision is expected to be more understated than the standard updates, according to Japanese publication Nikkei. The design change would enable users to swap out the console’s battery, a feature currently absent in its current form.

While the adjustment is targeted at Europe, speculation suggests Nintendo might extend these modifications to Japan and the US if public demand grows. The UK, though not part of the EU, is likely to receive the updated console as well, given its alignment with European product offerings.

The Japanese-only Switch 2 variant, priced at £235, was introduced to offset the yen’s current devaluation. If Nintendo releases a revised model for Europe, it would mean each of the three major markets—Japan, the US, and Europe—could end up with distinct console iterations.

Despite the Switch 2’s record-breaking sales, its momentum has waned in recent months. The original Switch, which shares similar internal battery challenges, may also face an update, but its end-of-life timeline could make such a change less urgent for Nintendo.

Previously, in 2019, Nintendo enhanced the original Switch’s battery life with minor design tweaks, a move that could mirror the current strategy. However, the company has yet to confirm any official changes, leaving the latest developments in question.
