Boy, 14, dies in e-bike crash with car as parents warn ‘this is reason why they are banned from the roads’

Tragedy strikes as 14-year-old boy dies in e-bike collision with car

Parents urge caution after fatal accident on Newbold Road

A tragic incident on Newbold Road in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, left a 14-year-old boy dead after his e-bike collided with a Kia Sportage. The accident occurred around 8:30pm last Thursday, sending both the rider and his 15-year-old passenger flying onto the road. Finley Dawson, the deceased, was rushed to hospital but suffered injuries deemed “non-survivable,” resulting in his death the following day.

The surviving boy, Finley’s pillion passenger, remains hospitalized in serious but stable condition. Derbyshire police have confirmed the car driver is acting as a witness, aiding investigations into the crash. No arrests have been made at this time.

“There is a reason these bikes are banned from the road, and devastatingly Finley has paid the ultimate price in losing his life,” the families stated in a joint message.

They emphasized the risks of riding electric motorbikes on public roads, warning that the “quick thrill” can lead to fatal consequences. The statement highlighted how Finley’s friend now grapples with the loss of his closest companion, underscoring the emotional toll of the accident.

In the UK, riders must be at least 16 and possess a valid driving license to operate electric motorbikes on roads. Pedal-assisted e-bikes, however, can be ridden by individuals aged 14 and older, provided their power output does not exceed 250 watts. This distinction has sparked renewed debate over safety regulations for young riders.
