Dogs ‘doing really well’ after 250 found crammed in living room, RSPCA says

In early 2024, over 250 poodle-cross dogs were rescued from a severely overcrowded property, and the RSPCA has reported that many of them are now recovering well. A recent image shared by a rescuer highlighted the cramped conditions, with dozens of the animals confined in a single living room. Despite the harsh circumstances, the charity noted that the dogs’ condition has improved significantly.

Owners’ Circumstances Influenced the Situation

According to the RSPCA, the incident occurred amid “extenuating family circumstances” that led to the rapid accumulation of animals. Lee Hopgood, the charity’s operational superintendent for the North of England, remarked that “surprisingly, the dogs are fine and doing really, really well.” However, several were found with “matted and crusted coats,” requiring medical attention and grooming.

Of the rescued animals, 87 were placed under the care of the RSPCA, while the rest were transferred to Dogs Trust. A spokesperson for Dogs Trust stated that “many of the dogs have now been successfully rehomed and are enjoying life in their forever homes.” Some still remain in the organization’s care, including those who gave birth while in their temporary shelter.

Boone’s Journey to a New Home

“He’d never been on a lead before, so when you put a lead on he locked his claws to the floor, he didn’t know what that was.”

One of the rescued poodle-cross dogs, Boone, was adopted by Dermot Murphy, a former RSPCA inspectorate commissioner. When Boone first joined Murphy’s family, he was underweight and had sores on his ears and eyes. Murphy explained that Boone had to be carried in and out of the car initially, as he struggled to adapt to being outside the cramped living room.

Adjusting to a new environment has been challenging for Boone, with the transition described as “a bit of a sensory overload.” The dog needed gradual exposure to new experiences, but he has since progressed to walking on a lead and playing with a ball. Murphy added, “It’s just fantastic to see how he’s come out of himself and become part of our family.”

Root Causes and Social Media Response

The RSPCA linked the overcrowding to factors such as mental health challenges, the cost of living crisis, or poor breeding practices. In a statement, they clarified that the “shocking” image of the dogs in the living room was not generated by AI, addressing claims that it might have been digitally altered. The photo, they said, captures the “staggering reality” of multi-animal incidents, which have surged by 70% in England and Wales since 2021.

Poodle-cross dogs, also known as “doodles,” have gained popularity in recent years. A 2025 Dogs Trust survey revealed they rank among the top three crossbreeds owned by dog lovers. In November, the RSPCA reported rescuing 80 dogs—primarily chihuahuas, pomeranians, and crossbreeds—from a home in Bedfordshire.
