Football Rally in Peru Leaves One Fan Dead and Dozens Injured

A tragic event unfolded during a local football derby in Lima, Peru, resulting in one fatality and multiple injuries. The incident occurred before a match between Alianza Lima and their rivals, Universitario de Deportes. Authorities are currently examining the cause of the chaos.

Dispute Over Structural Collapse

Early reports claimed parts of the stadium’s wall had collapsed, trapping spectators. However, this claim has been challenged by officials. Peruvian Health Minister Juan Carlos Velasco Guerrero confirmed the death at a Lima hospital, stating that 47 individuals were affected, with three in critical condition.

“There are no collapsed walls or sections fallen into the pit,” said Fire Chief Marcos Pajuelo, addressing concerns about the southern stands’ condition.

The rally at Alejandro Villanueva Stadium saw hundreds of fans gathering, wearing home team jerseys and displaying Alianza Lima flags. Despite the disruption, the football league announced that Saturday night’s match would proceed as scheduled.

Clarifications from Football Clubs

Initially, the interior ministry reported that 40 firefighters were deployed to an emergency involving people trapped in a structure. Alianza Lima later clarified on X that the incident was unrelated to any collapse of stadium walls or facilities.

“According to preliminary information, the incident is not linked to structural failures at the sports complex,” the club stated.

The Peruvian Professional Football League reiterated its dedication to attendee safety, emphasizing ongoing investigations into the circumstances of the rally.
