Man Arrested Over Deaths of Four in Channel Crossing Attempt

A Sudanese man, 27 years old, was detained on suspicion of endangering lives after four individuals died during a perilous attempt to board a small boat for the Channel crossing on Thursday. The National Crime Agency (NCA) stated that the incident occurred near Saint Etienne au Mont, a location close to Calais, where two men and two women, whose identities remain undisclosed, perished. The suspect was taken into custody at the Manston processing centre in Kent, according to the NCA.

Following the incident, 38 people were repatriated to the French coast, while 74 others successfully reached the UK. Investigators are currently questioning those who made the journey. French prosecutors are also examining the conditions that led to the boat’s departure, with the NCA confirming its support for the ongoing inquiries.

“Collaborating with both domestic and international teams, we are committed to uncovering the individuals accountable for these four tragic fatalities,” said Craig Turner, NCA deputy director.

“Each fatality in the Channel represents a profound loss,” remarked Migration Minister Mike Tapp. “Our law enforcement agencies will persist in their efforts with global partners to halt these dangerous crossings and secure justice for those involved.”
