Newlywed Wife of US Soldier Freed by ICE After Detention at Military Base

Annie Ramos, a 22-year-old undocumented immigrant, has been released by ICE following her five-day detention at a military installation in Louisiana. The incident occurred just days after she married Staff Sergeant Matthew Blank, a U.S. Army serviceman stationed there. Ramos, who arrived in the U.S. as a toddler, was arrested on 2 April and held alongside hundreds of others facing deportation under the Trump-era immigration policies.

A Happy Week Turned Difficult

Blank expressed relief after his wife’s return, calling it “the worst days of my life.” In a statement to the New York Times, he said, “I feel awesome. Relieved. Relieved.” The couple had traveled from Houston to the Louisiana base to secure a military ID for Ramos and activate her spouse benefits, planning to relocate her to the base over Easter weekend. Instead, Ramos was abruptly taken from him, marking a painful shift from their celebratory plans.

“I never imagined that trying to do the right thing would lead to her being taken away from me,” Blank told the BBC earlier. “What was supposed to be the happiest week of our lives has turned into one of the hardest.”

Ramos was handcuffed by ICE agents and transported in a military vehicle. The agency noted that detention is “a choice,” encouraging illegal aliens to use the CBP Home App for self-deportation, which includes financial incentives and a complimentary flight. Despite efforts by family members to contact officials, Ramos’s status remained unclear until her release.

A Nation’s Values at Stake

Ramos entered the U.S. illegally in 2005 and received a final removal order after missing an immigration hearing. At the time, she was about 22 months old. Legal experts cited by CBS News noted a shift in the administration’s approach, moving away from prior leniency toward military families in immigration cases.

Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona, whose family is based in the state, intervened on Ramos’s behalf. A spokesperson confirmed that Kelly also spoke with Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, who was already aware of the situation. “I’m happy Annie is back with her husband and family where she belongs,” Kelly said after her release. “They never should have gone through this painful process, but far too many families like theirs are because of this administration.”

“Detaining a 22-year-old biochemistry student who has lived here for two decades and is married to a U.S. Army staff sergeant preparing for deployment doesn’t make us safer – it weakens a military family, undermines our basic values, and exposes how far we’ve fallen as a nation,” said Gaby Pacheco, president of TheDream.US.

Hope for the Future

With her release, Ramos now focuses on stabilizing her legal status, advancing her education, and building a life with her husband. “All I have ever wanted is to live with dignity in the country I have called home since I was a baby,” she stated. “I want to finish my degree, continue my education, and serve my community – just as my husband serves our country with honor.”

Blank, who has served in the Middle East and Europe for over five years, is set to begin training soon for another deployment. “I’m complete and ready to serve our country. And it’s her country, too,” he added, reflecting on the emotional toll of the ordeal.
