Spanish police ‘dismantle’ Scottish drugs gang as crime boss arrested

Spanish Police Dismantle Scottish Drug Syndicate, Arrest Key Figure

Spanish authorities have claimed to have dismantled a drug trafficking network tied to the Lyons family, with the arrest of its leader, Steven Lyons, in the Netherlands. The operation unfolded after Lyons was deported from Bali to Indonesia, where he was apprehended on 28 March following his arrival from Singapore. The Civil Guard, one of Spain’s national law enforcement agencies, stated that the gang’s activities in the country have been effectively dismantled, resulting in 14 arrests across four nations and 20 individuals under scrutiny.

Operation Armorum Targets Global Network

The crackdown, known as Operation Armorum, has also led to the seizure of significant assets in Turkey. Spanish police froze high-value holdings linked to the Lyons organization, according to the statement. The Civil Guard highlighted that the operation involved 18 raids in recent days, primarily targeting locations in Barcelona and the Costa Del Sol. Electronic devices, cash, company records, luxury watches, and cryptocurrency wallets were among the items confiscated.

“We will not allow Indonesian territory, especially Bali, to become a safe haven for international criminals,” said Bugie Kurniawan, head of the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office, confirming Lyons’ deportation.

A Complex Web of Crime Across Continents

The Lyons group has built a far-reaching criminal infrastructure spanning Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Their operations include a sophisticated money laundering scheme using shell companies and international financial transactions, generating millions from drug trafficking. The Civil Guard emphasized that the gang’s ability to coordinate across multiple countries—such as Spain, the UAE, and Turkey—and collaborate with other criminal groups has established its dominance in modern European organized crime.

Steven Lyons’ Criminal Journey

Steven, a 45-year-old Glasgow native, was listed as an Interpol Red Notice suspect. His wife, Amanda, was detained in Dubai on the same day as his arrest. The operation follows a three-year investigation jointly conducted by Spanish authorities and Police Scotland. Lyons had previously survived a 2006 shooting in Lambhill, northern Glasgow, where his cousin lost his life. He later relocated to Spain and eventually settled in Dubai, where he is connected to the Kinahan crime group.

Shooting in Fuengirola Sparks New Allegations

In May, Steven’s brother, Eddie Lyons Jnr, and associate Ross Monaghan were fatally shot in a Fuengirola beachfront bar. Spanish police have accused Michael Riley, a 44-year-old Liverpool resident, of the murders. Riley initially contested extradition to Spain but later agreed to face charges. A detective from the Spanish National Police noted that Riley is linked to the rival Daniel gang, though Police Scotland insists the killings were unrelated to ongoing conflicts in the UK.
