Wireless Festival boss defends Kanye West appearance
Wireless Festival Director Justifies Kanye West’s Headliner Role
Following widespread criticism of Kanye West’s planned July appearance at the Wireless Festival, Melvin Benn, the event’s managing director, has publicly supported the rapper’s inclusion as a top act. Benn emphasized the importance of granting West a chance to redeem himself, encouraging the public to show “forgiveness” despite the controversy surrounding his past actions.
Benn Addresses Sponsor and Political Backlash
The decision to feature West sparked backlash, leading to sponsor exits like Pepsi and remarks from political figures. Benn noted that West’s controversial song “Heil Hitler” and his sale of swastika-themed merchandise last year had fueled the criticism. However, the rapper later issued an apology, attributing his remarks to his bipolar disorder.
“Forgiveness and giving people a second chance are becoming a lost virtue in this ever-increasing divisive world,” Benn stated.
Personal Reflections on Forgiveness
Benn highlighted his own journey with mental health, sharing that he has cared for someone with a mental illness for 15 years. This experience, he said, has taught him to overlook “despicable behaviour” and embrace hope. “If I wasn’t before, I have become a person of forgiveness and hope in all aspects of my life, including work,” he added.
“What Ye has said in the past about Jews and Hitler is as abhorrent to me as it is to the Jewish community, the prime minister and others that have commented—and to Ye now also,” Benn explained.
Benn also clarified that the festival’s focus is on West’s music rather than his political views. “We are not giving him a platform to extol opinions of any kind,” he said. “Only to perform songs that are currently played on radio and streaming platforms and enjoyed by millions.”
Meanwhile, the UK government is assessing whether West should be permitted to enter the country. Benn, who lived on a kibbutz in the 1970s, positioned himself as a “deeply committed anti-fascist,” underscoring his belief in extending grace to those who seek to improve.
