British teen Sky Brown is skateboarding world champion again

British Teen Sky Brown Secures Skateboarding World Title Again

Sky Brown, a 17-year-old British skateboarder, has once more claimed the world championship title, following her earlier victory at the age of 14. Her latest triumph was celebrated in Brazil, where she shared the podium with her father, former skateboarder Stewart Brown.

“This feels huge and I’m so thankful,” Brown said, reflecting on her success. She also noted, “There are bigger things and I just pray for peace for the world,” referencing the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

The competition in São Paulo faced postponement due to adverse weather and persistent rain, which disrupted the event’s schedule. After the finalists completed two of the four planned runs, organizers opted to finalize the results, citing safety concerns for the skaters as heavy rainfall continued.

World Skate officials announced Brown as the winner, with nearly four points ahead at 88.16. Japan’s Mizuho Hasegawa earned silver with 84.36, and American Minna Stess took bronze with 83.90. Brown expressed her emotions post-win, stating, “The level is crazy. I had to put a lot down to get here, but I am definitely bummed that we couldn’t fully do a final.” She added, “But to win, to be a world champ on International Women’s Day means a lot.”

Brown’s current ranking places her seventh globally, while 15-year-old Hasegawa leads the standings. The two athletes shared a heartfelt embrace after the event, highlighting their camaraderie. This is Brown’s second world title, having previously won at 14 during the World Championships in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, with a top score of 90.83.

Her journey to prominence began earlier than most. At 13, she became Great Britain’s youngest Olympic medalist ever, earning bronze at the Tokyo 2020 Games. Just weeks after dislocating her shoulder, she added another bronze in the park competition at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Born in Miyazaki, Japan, to a Japanese mother, Mieko, and a British father, Stewart Brown, she made her debut at the US Open in 2016 at age eight and later chose to compete for Great Britain in 2018.
