Aliyev vows attacks on Azerbaijan ‘will face our Iron Fist’ after Iran drone strike
Aliyev Threatens Iranian Attackers with ‘Iron Fist’ Response Following Drone Strike
Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev has ordered the nation’s military to reach maximum readiness after Tehran’s drones struck the Nakhchivan International Airport and a rural school, resulting in injuries to four civilians. The decision came as part of a broader directive to “prepare and execute countermeasures” against the attack, which targeted critical infrastructure in the country’s exclave. Aliyev emphasized that Iran must not only apologize but also provide a full explanation for the incident, vowing to hold those responsible accountable under criminal law.
During the Security Council meeting on Thursday, Aliyev highlighted that the attack was not an isolated event, urging Tehran to clarify its intentions. His tone echoed his previous assertive stance on the Azerbaijan Airlines Flight 8243 crash in December 2024, where he directly blamed Russia for the incident. The president also confirmed that detailed instructions had been issued for a coordinated response plan, underscoring Azerbaijan’s preparedness to act decisively.
“I immediately instructed that assistance be provided and that an aircraft be sent. They even said they were ready to pay for it. I said it was not necessary — if we do not help in difficult times, when should we help? And in return for all this, to strike Nakhchivan in such a treacherous and dishonorable manner? This stain will never be erased from their disgraceful image,” Aliyev stated.
Hours after the Security Council session, Azerbaijan suspended cross-border movement with Iran, signaling a potential escalation in diplomatic tensions. The president also referenced past actions he attributed to Iran, alleging that the country had orchestrated attacks against Azerbaijani citizens. He pointed to the growing friction between Azerbaijan and Iran over the Azerbaijani diaspora in the region, as well as Azerbaijan’s strong ties with Israel.
Turkey swiftly condemned the drone strikes, with its ministry declaring unwavering support for Azerbaijan. “We strongly condemn the drone attacks carried out today on Azerbaijan,” the statement read, adding that Ankara “will continue to stand by Azerbaijan, as it always has.” The regional ally’s response highlights the ongoing alignment between Baku and Ankara in the face of perceived threats from Tehran.
