How a Predatory Fake Taxi Driver Targeted a Vulnerable Woman in Newcastle
Moment fake taxi driver kidnapped drunk - Disturbing surveillance video has captured the harrowing instant when a man impersonating a taxi driver snatched a heavily intoxicated woman from the pavement and forced her into his vehicle. The chilling footage reveals Kuldip Chahal, a 51-year-old predator, dragging his lone victim toward his white Volkswagen Golf after she became separated from her companions during an evening of socializing.
The incident occurred in Newcastle city centre at approximately 2:20am on December 21 of last year. According to CCTV evidence captured on Fenkle Street, the woman had been waiting for transportation when Chahal approached her. He assisted her from the ground, placed his arm around her shoulders, and then guided her toward his parked car, which was situated roughly ten minutes away on foot.
A Calculated Attack Captured on Camera
The surveillance footage clearly shows Chahal, dressed in a black hooded coat, helping the disoriented woman into the front passenger seat of his vehicle. Rather than immediately driving off, he circled the car and attempted to depart. However, police officers who had been monitoring the live CCTV feed noticed suspicious activity and quickly coordinated with ground units to intercept the vehicle before it could escape.
Chahal was completely unaware that he was being watched as part of Northumbria Police's Operation Salus, a specialized initiative designed to identify and protect vulnerable women during nighttime hours in the city centre. The operation ensures that officers are readily available to intervene whenever situations appear concerning or potentially dangerous.
Justice Delivered at Newcastle Crown Court
Following a comprehensive one-week trial held at Newcastle Crown Court in May, Chahal was found guilty of kidnapping. The court sentenced him to seven years behind bars, with an additional extended licence period of three years to serve. Furthermore, he was placed under a lifetime Sexual Harm Prevention Order, restricting his future interactions with potential victims.
During the proceedings, Detective Constable Courtney Cran, who spearheaded the investigation for Newcastle's CID, praised the victim-survivor for demonstrating remarkable courage, resilience, and composure throughout both the investigation and the subsequent criminal proceedings.
Chahal is a predatory individual who deliberately targeted a lone, vulnerable young woman who was simply trying to get home safely after a night out with friends. He showed absolutely no regard for her welfare or the devastating impact his actions would have, repeatedly denying any wrongdoing and forcing her to relive her trauma during the trial.
The Victim's Powerful Testimony
The unnamed woman provided moving evidence in court, describing how the incident fundamentally altered her life. She explained that prior to the attack, she was a confident and sociable young woman who cherished spending time with her friends.
Before this happened, I was a confident and sociable young woman who enjoyed spending time with my friends. I never imagined that something so frightening could happen to me whilst simply spending time with friends. What happened that night has changed me.
She continued to describe her ongoing struggle with anxiety and stress in the aftermath of the kidnapping. The experience left her questioning her own safety in situations she once navigated without hesitation.
Since that night, I have struggled to feel safe in situations that I previously would not have thought twice about. The thing I struggle with most is knowing that I was vulnerable and that somebody chose to take advantage of that vulnerability. I was a young woman trying to get home after a night out with friends.
The victim emphasized how dehumanizing the experience felt, noting that she was viewed not as a person but as an opportunity for exploitation by a man more than twice her age.
Instead, I became the target of a man more than twice my age who saw my vulnerability and chose to exploit it. I was not seen as a person. I was seen as an opportunity. That is something I find incredibly difficult to come to terms with.
She expressed profound anger that someone else's choices had so drastically changed her life, causing her to lose confidence and miss important moments with friends. The anxiety stemming from the incident has made her reconsider activities that once brought her joy.
Detective Constable Cran highlighted how the vigilance of officers that evening proved crucial. Thanks to their quick intervention, Chahal was brought to a halt, and his web of lies was subsequently unraveled through careful investigation and collaboration with neighbourhood policing colleagues and key partners.
