Sledgehammer gang plead guilty to £225,000 daytime smash-and-grab jewellery raid
Three Men Admit Guilt in Major Richmond Jewellery Heist
Sledgehammer gang plead guilty to 225 000 - A trio of offenders have formally acknowledged their culpability following a dramatic midday burglary at a prestigious Richmond jewellers. The incident, which occurred in one of London's most affluent districts, involved the theft of approximately £225,000 in precious gems and gold pieces. What makes this case particularly notable is the area's recent prominence as a filming location for the popular television series Ted Lasso.
The Daylight Robbery Unfolds
Video surveillance captured the moment two hooded figures violently smashed through the storefront window of Gregory & Co using a heavy sledgehammer. The assault took place in January, drawing the attention of passersby who witnessed the brazen theft. After securing their haul of valuable merchandise, the perpetrators fled toward Richmond Green while onlookers watched in disbelief.
The jewellers occupies a prime position, situated merely two properties away from the residence of Richmond AFC's manager, which serves as the setting for the Appletv production. This connection to the show has sparked local concern that the television exposure has transformed the neighbourhood into a magnet for criminal activity.
Guilty Pleas at Kingston Crown Court
Deniz Mehmet, aged 28 and originally from Basildon, entered a guilty plea to conspiracy to rob at Kingston Crown Court on Friday. His co-defendants, Robert Clarke, 50, from Rochford, and Lee Ramsey, 46, of Harlow, similarly admitted their involvement in the conspiracy on May 22 at the same venue.
Specialist officers conducted a thorough examination of closed-circuit television recordings, complemented by forensic investigations and the identification of a vehicle potentially connected to the crime. These investigative efforts ultimately enabled police to locate and apprehend the three suspects on suspicion of conspiracy to commit robbery.
Locals Blame Ted Lasso for Increased Crime
Residents have expressed growing anxiety that the television series has inadvertently drawn unwanted attention to their community. Tony Puci, a nearby resident, commented on the situation:
The Ted Lasso thing has definitely attracted more criminals it's a magnet for thieves. Around a year ago someone tried to burgle Ted Lasso's flat.
He continued by describing his firsthand observation of the jewellery raid:
I saw the raid on the jewellers it was in the morning and so shocking. I saw a bloke with a sledgehammer bashing the window. It was all over in under a minute.
Karen Lewis, 65, who resides in the vicinity, shared similar sentiments about the area becoming vulnerable to burglars:
The filming has brought unwanted attention to the area. There are more burglaries around the green with thieves knowing the houses are empty. Sometimes people live abroad some of the year. On the day of the robbery I could have been going past and caught up in it. It's all very frightening.
Eyewitness Accounts of the Chaos
Amy Hilton, a 26-year-old airline employee, was dining at a nearby café when she heard the commotion. She recounted her experience to Metro:
I was in the cafe nearby. I heard a thumping and then looked over and two men were bashing in the window. It was very shocking there were people out and about and everyone was scared. The locals have been saying it could be the Ted Lasso series that has made the area more of a target. It was really scary.
The jewellers is located close to Richmond Green, an area where international celebrities and business leaders have established their homes.
Police Response and Crime Statistics
Detective Superintendent Dan Mitchell, who heads the Flying Squad's investigation into the robbery, emphasized the impact on local communities:
Robberies of this kind cause real concern for residents and businesses in the communities that are targeted. It's they who feel the immediate impact.
He added:
These guilty pleas mark a significant step in what has been a detailed and determined investigation. I hope they demonstrate our commitment to tackling smash‑and‑grab robberies in London by going after those involved, wherever they are. The groups responsible should be under no illusion – we will pursue you relentlessly and hold you to account.
