Tennis dominates as Carlos Alcaraz and Aryna Sabalenka win at Laureus World Sports Awards

Tennis Claims Center Stage at Laureus Awards as Alcaraz and Sabalenka Shine

On Monday, the Laureus World Sports Awards in Madrid highlighted the sport of tennis with standout performances from Carlos Alcaraz and Aryna Sabalenka. Both athletes were honored with individual accolades, marking a significant moment in their careers. Alcaraz, who arrived at the event with a wrist brace, shared insights about his remarkable 2025 season and his anticipation for the upcoming French Open. Sabalenka, meanwhile, reflected on her “crazy” year, emphasizing the lessons she gained from both triumphs and challenges.

Arcane Injury and Resilience

Alcaraz’s injury concerns were evident as he showcased his right wrist in a brace. Reports had hinted at his wrist issues earlier in the week, following his withdrawals from the Barcelona Open and Madrid Open. At the awards, he discussed the uncertainty surrounding his condition, hoping to return to action ahead of Roland Garros. “I could be better, to be honest,” he said. “These things happen. It is hopefully nothing serious, I don’t know yet.”

“It’s not about if you get injured, it’s about when and how you come back, so I’m just trying to take care of myself as good as I can and trying to be on court soon again.”

The 22-year-old Spaniard’s 2025 campaign saw him maintain his stellar form, securing the Australian Open title and completing a career grand slam. He also claimed the French and US Opens, solidifying his status as a rising force. However, his journey wasn’t without hurdles. A mid-year break allowed him to reset his mindset, which he credited with reigniting his passion. “I came back with a lot of joy again, happy to step on the court,” he added. “And I think after that, when you’re feeling good with yourself, everything comes after all.”

Rivalry Fuels Ambition

Looking forward, Alcaraz aims to be prepared for every tournament, driven by his intense rivalry with world No. 1 Jannik Sinner. The pair have dominated the grand slams since the 2023 US Open, with each victory pushing the other to greater heights. “The rivalry that I have with Jannik is in my mind every day,” he noted. “Every time I step on the court for practice, I think about how to improve and how to perform against him next.”

“So I think this rivalry is really beautiful. I’m really grateful for having him around, although not when he beats me.”

Sabalenka’s 2025 season was equally notable, with her reaching three grand slam finals and ultimately winning the US Open. Her journey included close losses at the Australian Open and French Open, which she described as valuable experiences. “I have to always remind myself that I’m so strong, I’m so powerful, and I can go through whatever,” she said. “If it didn’t happen today, I know I’m strong enough to come back next time and do a better job.”

“I’m actually really grateful for those tough losses because they teach me a lot. They help me to become much better not only as an athlete, but as a person as well.”

To celebrate her US Open triumph, Sabalenka welcomed a new pet dog named Ash, a tribute to the Flushing Meadows court where she secured her victory. Her success was matched by Alcaraz’s own achievements, making the Laureus ceremony a testament to their relentless pursuit of excellence.
