Democrat Betty Yee exits California governor’s race

Democrat Betty Yee Exits California Governor’s Race

Withdrawal of a Key Democratic Candidate

Yet another Democratic candidate has withdrawn from the competitive race to lead California. Betty Yee, a former state controller, announced her decision to suspend her campaign on Monday. This follows the departure of fellow Democrat and former U.S. Representative Eric Swalwell, who left the race a week earlier after facing sexual assault allegations he disputes.

Challenges in Fundraising and Polling

Yee aimed to become the first woman to hold the state’s top executive position. However, her campaign struggled with limited financial support and remained stagnant in early polls since the race began in 2024. Despite efforts to position herself as a candidate prioritizing practical solutions over sensationalized rhetoric, she failed to gain significant traction among voters.

“A candidate who focuses on solutions rather than soundbites,” Yee emphasized, while also branding herself as “boring Betty” to highlight her measured approach.

Racial Dynamics and Primary System

The race remains intensely contested, with over 50 names on the ballot. Yee’s exit has not dramatically altered the field, as she was already positioned near the bottom in voter support. Democrats now worry that their numerous candidates might dilute their chances in November, given California’s primary system that allows only the top two vote-getters to advance to the general election.

Candidates in Close Competition

Recent polling by the nonpartisan Public Policy Institute of California revealed a tight contest among several contenders. Democrats Tom Steyer and former U.S. Rep. Katie Porter, along with Republicans Steve Hilton and Chad Bianco, are vying for prominence. Swalwell, who was among the leading Democrats before his exit, had been a key player in the race. The survey was conducted prior to his withdrawal, leaving the field more fragmented than before.

Mail Ballots and Election Timeline

Mail-in ballots will be distributed to voters in early May, preceding the June 2 primary election. At this stage, Yee’s name cannot be erased from the ballot, but her absence may shift the balance of power in the Democratic primary. The race for the governor’s office is now more unpredictable, with no clear frontrunner emerging among the remaining candidates.
