Britain’s royals remember Queen Elizabeth II on what would have been her 100th birthday
On the anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s 100th birthday, the British royal family will unveil a new memorial and charity initiative in central London to honor the longest-serving monarch in the nation’s history. The event, scheduled for Tuesday, will feature multiple tributes, including a video message from King Charles III reflecting on his mother’s enduring legacy.
Events to celebrate the centenary
King Charles III and Queen Camilla will visit the British Museum to review designs for the memorial, while Princess Anne will open the Queen Elizabeth II Garden in Regent’s Park. The royal couple’s participation underscores the significance of the day, which marks nearly four years since the queen’s passing at age 96.
Memorial design highlights
The proposed memorial in St. James’ Park includes a translucent glass bridge symbolizing unity, inspired by the tiara worn on her wedding day. A statue of the queen and Prince Philip will also be part of the project. The Elizabeth statue, crafted by sculptor Martin Jennings, draws from Pietro Annigoni’s iconic portrait, capturing her in the robes of the Order of the Garter and gazing toward the horizon.
Digital tribute and community focus
People around the world will be able to reflect on their own memories of the late queen and ‘tag them to events and locations on the site,’ the Cabinet Office said.
In addition to the physical memorial, a digital platform will showcase archival footage and artifacts from her reign. This interactive space aims to connect individuals with the queen’s legacy through personal recollections and historical highlights.
Charitable initiative
A new charity, The Queen Elizabeth Trust, has been launched with a £40 million endowment. The organization will support local institutions like community centers and public green spaces, continuing the queen’s commitment to national service.
Buckingham Palace activities
Later on Tuesday, Charles and Camilla will invite charity advocates and centenarians to Buckingham Palace for a special gathering. The day will also see the release of commemorative stamps and coins, alongside a months-long exhibition showcasing an extensive collection of the queen’s fashion, the largest public display of her style ever assembled.
