Ex-Student Opens Fire at High School in Turkey, Leaving 16 Injured
Shooting Occurs at Siverek District School
A shooting at a high school in southeastern Turkey left 16 individuals hurt, including 10 students, four educators, a cafeteria staff member, and a police officer. The attack took place around 09:30 local time (06:30 GMT) at the Ahmet Koyuncu Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in the Siverek district. The school was quickly evacuated following the incident.
The assailant, identified as an ex-student in his late teens, used a shotgun to fire indiscriminately before turning the weapon on himself. Five of the injured were later transported to different hospitals for additional care. Authorities have initiated an investigation into the event.
A witness shared with IHA News: “The attacker was a teenager, roughly 17-18 years old. He suddenly entered the school yard through the front entrance. As he stepped inside, he retrieved a long, robust firearm resembling a pump-action shotgun with a rimmed design.” “He began firing in all directions, then targeted the school building. Once inside, he shot anyone approaching, and the chaos caused everyone to flee immediately.”
One of the injured students, Ömer Furkan Sayar, told TRT, Turkey’s state broadcaster, that the shooter entered multiple classrooms, including his own. “Initially, we dropped to the ground, and two of us climbed out the window. He didn’t speak, just started shooting as he walked in,” he said.
Hasan Şildak, the local governor, noted that the attacker had no prior criminal history and that the school was deemed secure by police. The incident has sparked renewed discussions about campus safety measures in the region.
