Israel launches ground assault in southern Lebanon

Defense Minister authorizes new military operation

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has sanctioned a ground operation in southern Lebanon, marking a shift in the region’s military strategy. The move comes as tensions escalate between Israel and Hezbollah, with hostilities resuming following recent developments in the Iran conflict.

Katz stated that he and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had approved the army’s plan to “secure additional strategic ground in Lebanon.” This decision, he emphasized, was aimed at “minimizing risks of incoming fire targeting Israeli settlements.”

“We are taking decisive action to ensure our communities remain safe,” Katz declared. “This operation will strengthen our defensive position in the area.”

The Israeli military confirmed that forces had moved “into more advanced positions” south of the current front lines, extending past the five posts held since the 2024 ceasefire. The campaign is part of an effort to “fortify forward defenses” against potential threats.

Lebanon’s Hezbollah began attacking northern Israeli towns on Monday, citing the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, as justification. In response, Israel launched intense airstrikes, resulting in casualties and forcing hundreds from their homes.

The renewed conflict follows a day of heightened activity, with both sides intensifying their efforts in the ongoing regional standoff. The operation underscores Israel’s commitment to maintaining security along its border with Lebanon.
