Physical Release of Criticized Silent Hill Title Carries Steep Price Tag
A rubbish Silent Hill game that – One of the most poorly received entries in the Silent Hill catalog is finally receiving a physical distribution, though the cost associated with this milestone release has raised eyebrows among collectors and fans alike. Silent Hill: The Short Message, a brief first-person experience that launched digitally at no charge, is now available through Limited Run Games in a premium boxed format.
A Franchise Finding Its Feet
The Silent Hill brand has experienced something of a renaissance in recent years. Following the critically acclaimed remake of Silent Hill 2 and the subsequent release of Silent Hill f, the series appears to be riding a wave of positive momentum. However, this success stands in stark contrast to the period immediately preceding 2024, when the franchise struggled to find its footing.
Before these triumphs arrived, gamers endured Silent Hill: Ascension, an ambitious but flawed interactive television series that incorporated aggressive microtransactions throughout its runtime. Many observers considered this title to be among the weakest releases of its generation. Following Ascension came The Short Message, a two-hour first-person adventure that, despite being complimentary, failed to deliver genuine scares or sustained entertainment value.
Physical Format Meets Premium Pricing
While The Short Message remains accessible at no cost through the PlayStation Store, collectors seeking tangible ownership now have an option. Limited Run Games has announced a deluxe physical edition that will be available for pre-order beginning Friday, July 10, with shipments scheduled to commence in January 2027. This marks the title’s debut in physical form, a development that arrives just as Sony announced reductions to its physical disc offerings.
The pricing structure, however, presents an interesting paradox. Consumers can download the game immediately without spending anything, yet the deluxe physical package demands $69.99, which converts to approximately £52. This premium positioning has prompted comparisons with other contemporary releases.
The message waits for you…SILENT HILL: The Short Message will be yours to own forever in PHYSICAL form! Uncover the truth behind Maya’s final messages with the DELUXE EDITION for a limited time. Pre-orders begin this Friday, July 10!
What Buyers Receive for Their Money
The deluxe edition includes several collectible items alongside the game itself. Purchasers receive a set of art cards featuring in-game imagery, an art poster depicting one of the game’s monsters, an acrylic keychain, and a certificate of authenticity. While these extras add value, many feel they do not fully justify the £52 asking price, particularly given the game’s brevity and mixed reception.
For additional context, £52 represents £18 less than the pre-order cost for Grand Theft Auto 6. The same amount would secure a copy of Astro Bot, while purchasing the physical edition of 2024’s Silent Hill 2 would cost £12 less than The Short Message’s deluxe package.
Looking Ahead for the Series
Beyond these releases, the franchise continues to expand. Silent Hill: Townfall, the next major installment, is scheduled to arrive on PlayStation 5 and PC platforms on September 24, 2026. Interestingly, despite what trailers might suggest, the game is set in Scotland rather than the more traditional American locations associated with the series. This geographical choice mirrors The Short Message, which is supposedly set in Germany despite offering little visual evidence to support that setting.
Additionally, developer Bloober Team continues work on a remake of the original Silent Hill title, though no official release date has been confirmed for this project yet.
