The Journey from Naples to London

The story behind this celebrated pizzeria begins with Michele Pascarella, a native of Naples whose passion for pizza-making started at an unusually young age. According to the restaurant’s history, Pascarella began crafting pizzas when he was merely eleven years old, discovering early on that this craft would define his life’s work.

By the time he reached nineteen, Pascarella had made the decision to relocate to the United Kingdom. His professional journey included stints at several notable establishments, most notably Sartori in Soho, before he eventually launched his own venture. The business began as a mobile operation, selling wood-fired pizzas from a van—a concept that directly inspired the “on the Road” portion of the restaurant’s name.

Expanding Across the Capital

The transition from mobile vendor to permanent establishment occurred in September 2019, when the first brick-and-mortar location opened its doors. Success followed quickly, leading to a second venue in Richmond in June 2023. Most recently, a third location debuted in Soho during February of this year, bringing the total to three thriving restaurants across London.

Smothered in a rich, slow-cooked beef ragu, it’s by no means the easiest pizza to eat (sorry to say you will need a knife and fork for this one), but my god, it’s worth the mess.

Vegetarians and non-meat eaters have their own special option in the Cheesewick, a playful nod to the Chiswick area. This sophisticated five-cheese pizza features Buffalo ricotta, fior di latte, Buffalo stracciatella, Parmesan chips, dry blue Stilton, and piennolo cherry tomato jam. The tomato jam provides just enough tanginess to balance the cheeses without overwhelming them.

For those seeking something beyond pizza, the gateau di patate (£10) deserves attention. This dish layers crispy baked potatoes with mashed potatoes, rosemary raclette, and grated cheese, creating what one reviewer described as “carb heaven.”

The Ricordi d’Infanzia remains the definitive main course experience. While it requires utensils rather than hands, the combination of rich flavors and high-quality ingredients makes every bite memorable.
